How We Got Started
The reason I decided to make these pickles, relish & jams was that I went home to Hexham recently and now that I have reached the age of 60 every time I smell fresh turned soil or fresh cut grass it takes me back to my youth when I was born and spent my early years on the farm on Clearers Lane just out of Hexham in Western Victoria. With these familiar smells comes the taste of home made pickles & relish. I remember dad and the uncle working up in the paddocks or in the shearing shed and come smoko mum or aunty jean would deliver the basket full of scones and “dagwood’s” of cold lamb sandwiches usually with a thermos of hot tea and a little bottle of milk and a jar of sugar with a few teaspoons (we had sheep so it was often cold lamb that had been slow roasted in the old combustion oven and was left over from tea the night before). When I was about 15 or 16 I asked Dad how I could earn some extra pocket money when he offered me a share of the annual wheat crop if I helped by doing most of the cropping work (ploughing, harrowing, seeding etc).
